Sallèles-Cabardès is a municipality in the south of France with 119 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region .
location
Sallèles-Cabardès is located in the old cultural landscape of Cabardès at the foot of the Montagne Noire at an altitude of about 270 meters above sea level. d. M. and about 20 kilometers (driving distance) northeast of Carcassonne . The distance to the southern canton capital of Conques-sur-Orbiel is almost ten kilometers. The Cathar town of Lastours is about six kilometers to the west.

In the 19th century the place always had between 150 and 300 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs, the number of inhabitants has decreased significantly in the 20th century.

The area around the town has been shaped by agriculture for centuries - especially viticulture, which in Cabardès may have been practiced in ancient times. At the end of the 20th century, tourism in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) was added as an economic factor.

- In the Grotte du Gazel , about a kilometer outside the village, systematic excavations in the first half of the 20th century have found prehistoric finds from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age . The cave has been designated as a monument historique since 1948 .
