In the 19th century the place had mostly between 200 and 380 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has since fallen to the lows of the last few decades. Due to the relative proximity to the cities of Carcassonne and Castelnaudary and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside, there has been a significant increase in the population in recent years.
economy
In earlier times, the residents of the village lived largely on self-sufficiency from agriculture, with both grain and wine being grown. In addition, they ran a little cattle (pigs, chickens, etc.). In the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period, woad ( pastel ) was planted. As in many places in Languedoc , viticulture has dominated since the 19th century; the local winegrowers' cooperative markets the wine produced here through the appellations Aude , Pays Cathare , Malepère and Pays d'Oc . Due to the wine sales crisis, however, only a few areas are still viniculture; mainly grain ( wheat , maize ) and sunflowers are sown.
history
In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the County of Carcassonne , which was transferred to a royal Sénéchaussée after the Albigensian Crusades (1226) .
Attractions
- The old town center with its partly ruinous half-timbered houses belongs to the type of Circulades - round villages that were built around a core consisting of a castle and / or church for defense reasons and whose outer house front served as a replacement for an expensive city wall.
- The parish church was built in the 13th century and - in the Tolosan tradition - largely made of bricks . A three-storey bell gable ( clocher mur ) rises above the unadorned west facade ; the later enlarged portal is on the north side of the church, the simple interior of which is barrel vaulted .
