The Katholische Akademie Stapelfeld is a non-profit, Catholic institution for adult education . The house is located in the district of Stapelfeld in the Lower Saxony city of Cloppenburg .

history

In 1974 what was then the folk high school was founded. The main building on Stapelfelder Kirchstrasse is older, however. It dates from the early 1950s. It was built as an orphanage by the Catholic Church with the help of money and donations in kind from the population . Up to 150 children and adolescents were looked after by Franciscan nuns from Thuín and attended the neighboring village school.

In memory of the cross fight in the schools of the Oldenburger Münsterland , the facility was named "Holy Cross". From the beginning, the house was closely associated with the name of the "Lion of Münster", Clemens August Cardinal von Galen . During the Nazi era , he spoke out in his sermons against the National Socialists' euthanasia program . In 2005 von Galen, today the namesake of the central academy building, was beatified.

In the mid-1970s, the children's home moved to the St. Michael youth castle in Bethen . The village school also closed its doors. While the old school now served as a parsonage, the newly established Folk High School moved into the former orphanage. Since then, the educational offer has been steadily expanded. Similar to how the adult education centers wanted to offer education and enlightenment for broad sections of the people when they were founded, the Danish founder Pastor Nicolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783–1872) also strived for the concept of living and learning under one roof. This concept was initially adopted in Stapelfeld over 150 years later. The Heimvolkshochschule is still evident today in the daily seminar operations with overnight stays in the academy house.

During the COVID-19 pandemic , the academy started a video blog called LebensZeichen on April 1, 2020 .
