Caunes-Minervois - marble quarry

Caunes-Minervois ( Occitan : Caunas de Menerbés ) is a French commune with 1,654 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Pays Cathare in the Minervois countryside . The place is well known for the red marble quarried in the surrounding quarries .

location

Caunes-Minervois lies at the foot of the Montagne Noire at an altitude of approx. 190 m above sea level. d. M. at the Argent-Double , a left tributary of the Aude , which, however, only reaches real river size after heavy or prolonged rainfall. The place is about 23 kilometers (driving distance) northeast of Carcassonne and about 50 kilometers northwest of Narbonne .

The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs in agriculture as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .

economy

For centuries the marble quarries played an important role in the town's economy; Today only a small amount of marble is broken, which is mainly used in the magnificent buildings of the Middle East.

Viticulture and sheep breeding have also been characteristic industries in the area for centuries; the city acts as a regional center for retail trade and handicrafts.

history

The place developed around the Carolingian abbey founded in 780 . In the 13th century, this was the focus of papal interest as a bulwark against the Cathars . In 1226, Pierre Isarn , an Albigensian bishop, was burned at the stake in Caunes in the presence of King Louis VIII .

  • The townscape with some pebble-paved streets still looks medieval in parts.
  • The Hôtel d'Alibert has a beautiful arcade-lined courtyard with a canopy fountain and dates from the 16th century. Today it serves as a restaurant, but has been registered as a Monument historique since 1926 .
  • The Hôtel de Sicard was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. Built in the 17th century in Renaissance forms; it has several large cross-storey windows facing the street. It has been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 .
  • The Hôtel de Tapié dates from the 17th century and has a Renaissance-style corner window. The building is privately owned, but has been registered as a Monument historique since 1948 .
  • The medieval city fortifications ( remparts ) were razed during the Huguenot Wars , as were the walls of the abbey; only a little of it can still be seen.
  • A beautiful fountain ( grande fontaine ) from the 1st quarter of the 19th century has been on the list of Monuments historiques since 1948 .
  • The crucifix chapel ( Chapelle du Crucifix ) stands on the southwestern edge of the village - a simple building from the late Gothic period with tracery windows and ribbed vaults . In the case of the Pietà kept inside, the sculptor saved the right leg and arm of the dead Christ, since both are turned away from the viewer anyway. The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
