In the 19th century the place always had between 400 and 600 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs has since led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants.
economy
The area around the village is still characterized by agriculture, which in the late Middle Ages and early modern times mainly concentrated on the cultivation of woad ( pastel ). The import of indigo led to a gradual economic decline from the 18th century and farmers turned back to 'normal' agriculture. At the end of the 20th century, tourism in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) was added as an economic factor.
history
The origins of the place - like many places in Lauragais - located on a hill probably go back a long way. In the Middle Ages, Mireval was surrounded by a city wall, of which two gates have survived. Nothing is known about the destruction during the Albigensian Crusades (1209–1229), the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
From June 7, 1972 to December 31, 1988, the municipality of Mireval-Lauragais was part of the municipality of Laurabuc .
Attractions
- The townscape of Mireval is one of the most beautiful in the Lauragais.
- The Gothic single-nave parish church ( Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste ), which dominates the town with its four-part bell gable, dates from the 13th century, but was modernized in the 19th century. The extremely high apse with its high-lying windows and the archivolt portal are remarkable due to the sloping terrain . The church was recognized as a Monument historique in 1994 .
- Two unadorned gates are still preserved from the former city fortifications from the 15th century.
- A wash house ( lavoir ) from the 19th century, which was also used as a cattle trough ( abreuvoir ), can also be seen.
- A restored windmill ( moulin-à-vent ) and a half-timbered pigeon house ( pigeonnier ) enrich the townscape.
- A roofed trestle ( travail ) that is still preserved is a testimony of rural life that is rarely preserved. It was used to restrain the animals during shoeing or hoof care.
