In the 19th century the place had almost 300 inhabitants at times. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a significant decline in the population.
economy
The area around the village is still characterized by agriculture, which in the late Middle Ages and early modern times mainly concentrated on the cultivation of woad ( pastel ). The import of indigo led to a gradual economic decline from the 18th century. At the end of the 20th century, tourism in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) was added as an economic factor.
Attractions
- The small parish church of Lafage still shows quarry stone masonry in places in its foundation walls. Other parts (west facade, south side of the nave), on the other hand, show a perfectly crafted stone work, which is particularly visible in the three-part baroque bell gable set off in red . A rarity in the south of France is the presence of a south porch ( portique ).
- From the former castle from the 15th or 16th century, only a round tower with adjacent remains of masonry remains, which has been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 .
