Moussoulens is a municipality in the south of France with 1018 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region .

location

Moussoulens is located on the small river Rougeanne at an altitude of about 190 meters above sea level. d. M. and about 15 kilometers (driving distance) northwest of Carcassonne or about seven kilometers northeast of the canton capital Alzonne .

In the 19th century the place always had between 400 and 550 inhabitants. Despite the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs, the number of inhabitants remained largely stable or even increased in the 20th century, mainly due to the comparatively low rents and land prices compared to the nearby city of Carcassonne related.

economy

The area around the village is still dominated by agriculture. Wine has been grown in the region since Roman times; the place is now part of the Cabardès wine region (AOC) . At the end of the 20th century, tourism in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) was added as an economic factor.

history

In 1175 Roger, the Vice Count of Carcassonne , allowed the residents of Moussolens to move to a higher ground. In the following centuries the town and its small castle ( château ) belonged to the manor ( seigneurie ) of the Voisins, Saint-Jean de Voisins u. a.

Attractions

  • The parish church of Saint-Martin in Moussoulens is a simple Gothic building from the 15th century with a tower on the south side of the structure.
  • The small castle, renovated in the 18th century, has been converted into a hotel.
  • There is a cooperative cellar ( cave cooperative ) on the outskirts .
