Saint-Papoul ( Occitan : Saint-Pàpol ) is a southern French municipality with 835 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitania region .
location
Saint-Papoul is located in the heart of the old cultural landscape of the Lauragais at an altitude of about 170 meters above sea level. d. M. and about 35 kilometers (driving distance) northwest of Carcassonne and about 8.5 kilometers east of Castelnaudary .

In the 19th century the place always had between 1,000 and 1,400 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs has since led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants.
economy
The area around the village is still characterized by agriculture, which in the late Middle Ages and early modern times mainly concentrated on the cultivation of woad ( pastel ). The import of indigo led to a gradual economic decline from the 18th century and farmers turned back to 'normal' agriculture. At the end of the 20th century, tourism in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) was added as an economic factor.
history
As early as the 8th century which was in a remote area at the time Benedictine - Saint-Papoul Cathedral founded gradually developed around which the present town. In 1317 Pope John XXII. the abbey became a bishopric , which lasted until the French Revolution . Nothing is known about the destruction during the Albigensian Crusades (1209–1229), the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).

Former Saint-Papoul Abbey
The comparatively well-preserved former monastery complex consisting of the abbey church , cloister , chapter house , refectory, etc. has been recognized as a monument historique since 1846 .
Others
- The bishop's palace connects to the south of the abbey. It was restored in the 15th century, but its current appearance dates largely from the 17th and 18th centuries. It was added to the list of Monuments historiques in 1943 and 2007, respectively.
- The Porte de l'Est , a well-fortified but unadorned entrance to the former abbey district, dates from the 13th century and has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
- The construction of the Château de Ferrals began in 1567. Even before its final completion, it saw the visit of the French King Charles IX. and his mother Catherine de Medici . The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1927 .
