The Abbey Church of Saint-Papoul is located in the French town of the same name, Saint-Papoul, in the Aude department ( Occitania region ), 40 km northwest of Carcassonne .

The Benedictine abbey was first mentioned at the Council of Aachen (816–819). Her name refers to a saint of the same name, a disciple of Saturnin , first bishop of Toulouse in the 3rd century . According to legend, St. Papoul died a martyr near the abbey ; a spring sprang from this place.

In 1317, Pope John XXII , who resided in Avignon , founded the diocese of Saint Papoul ; the abbey church thus became a cathedral . Up to the French Revolution , 34 bishops had their seat here. The church was looted several times: for example in 1361 in the Hundred Years War or in 1595 in the Huguenot Wars .

Extensive restorations took place in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the bishopric was dissolved in the French Revolution and the cathedral was downgraded to the town's parish church .

The abbey church is built in the Romanesque style and the associated cloister from the beginning of the 14th century in the Gothic style.

Some of the capitals on the outer wall of the apse are by the Master of Cabestany , an anonymous artist of the 12th century.
