In the 19th century the population increased from around 170 to over 300. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs led to a significant decline in population numbers to the lows of recent decades.

economy

For centuries, the residents of Blomac lived on their own farm work, which of course also included viticulture - the red, rosé and white wines produced in the municipality are sold through the appellations of Aude , Languedoc , Pays Cathare , Minervois , Pays d'Oc and Coteaux de Peyriac markets. Agriculture with wheat, barley and potatoes also played an important role. Sheep and goats were also raised for the wool, cheese, and meat. Nowadays, many vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The place probably has Roman or Gallo-Roman origins. The name Villa Bulmado has been handed down from the 10th century ; in the 12th century it became Blumatum and later Blomat . There is evidence of a medieval castle ( château ) opposite the church . For a long time the place and church belonged to the Abbey of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse .
