The Danube and Schmeiental area is a protected landscape area (LSG number 4.37.036) in the Baden-Württemberg district of Sigmaringen in Germany by ordinance of October 30, 1987 .

location

The approximately 8,000 hectares (= 100%) large reserve Danubian and Schmeiental is one natural area to the Danube Ablach plates , the Hegaualb which Baaralb and the Upper Danube Valley , the High Schwabenalb and the Middle Flächenalb .

The ten parts of the landscape extend to the districts of Beuron, Hausen im Tal and Thiergarten of the municipality of Beuron (30.4% = 2,426.6 hectares (ha)), the districts of Leibertingen and Kreenheinstetten of the municipality of Leibertingen (3.1% = 249.4 ha), the districts of Glashütte , Stetten and Storzingen of the municipality of Stetten am kalten Markt (25.8% = 2,057.6 ha), the municipality of Inzigkofen (4.4% = 350.3 ha), the districts of Gutenstein , Oberschmeien , Unterschmeien , Laiz and Sigmaringen of the city of Sigmaringen (27.9% = 2,228.4 ha), the municipality of Sigmaringendorf (1.3% = 106.7 ha), the city of Scheer (0.7% = 53.2 ha), the Districts Ennetach , Mengen, Blochingen and Beuren of the city of Mengen (3.0% = 238.1 ha) as well as the district of Hundersingen of the Herbertingen community (3.4% = 273.1 ha) along the Danube valley and the valley of Inzigkofen in Schmeie flowing into the Danube .

Protection purpose

The main purpose is to preserve the characteristic landscape of the Danube Valley in the area of the Danube Gorge, the Schmeiental and the Alb area with its extraordinary beauty due to the change in geological formations in impressive rocky areas and cave systems as well as the alternation of forest and forest clearings, with their variety of animal species and flora in hillside forests, wet meadows on numerous spring horizons , dry grasslands , numerous endangered or endangered species, some pre-alpine to alpine and sub-Mediterranean forms, as well as parts of the Danube valley in the area of the Upper Swabian Molasse basin with a moving relief, colorful change of forms of use in orchards, fields , Embankments, stone hedges and semi-arid lawns, spring areas and reed beds, with backwaters and alluvial forest remains as one of the most important recreational areas in the country and as an area of numerous valuable biotopes for the natural balance crucial ecological compensation function.

Contiguous protected areas

The protected area Danube and Schmeiental is part of the Obere Donau nature park and the FFH areas " Danube between Riedlingen and Sigmaringen " (7922-342), " Schmeietal " (7820-341) and " Upper Danube valley between Beuron and Sigmaringen " (7920- 342) as well as the bird sanctuary “ Südwestalb and Upper Danube Valley ” (SPA 7820-441).
