Oberschmeien is a district of the Baden-Württemberg city of Sigmaringen in the district of Sigmaringen ( Germany ).

geography

Geographical location

Oberschmeien lies in the valley of the eponymous Schmeie - the town center stretches along the left foot of the slope - and in the Obere Donau Nature Park . On the slope above there is a new development area. When the weather is clear, the Fürstenhöhe vantage point offers a view across Upper Swabia to the Alps. On the district area of 1022 hectares, there are also 641 hectares of forest.

history

Three graves found in Oberschmeien are evidence of early settlement by Alemannic settlers. Due to the bronze additions, they date to the second half of the 7th century.

In the late Middle Ages the Schmeiental belonged to the County of Hohenberg . A castle Schmeien (Smyehen) is first mentioned in 1334, near the village of Schmiehen , which Count Heinrich von Hohenberg sold in 1339 to the Knights of Jungingen . However, the feudal rights remained with the Hohenbergers or after the sale of the county to the Habsburgs in 1381 with them.

After the lords of Jungingen had also bought the castle and the mill in Smiechen in 1342 , they sold the entire property back to the lords of Oberstetten in 1346. It was then that the name Obron Schmiechen ( Obersmiehen ) appeared for the first time . Via the lords of Hausen (1379) and von Stuben (1397) the place came to the lords of Reischach (1409), who struck Jungnau under their rule .

In 1418 the Counts of Werdenberg acquired the place, but those of Reischach still kept property there. Schmeien Castle was not included in the frequent changes of ownership. It remained in the possession of the von Hausen family. In 1461 and 1497 it was referred to as the Burgstall, ie a ruin.

After the Counts of Werdenberg died out in 1534, the Jungnau lordship fell to the Fürstenberg family by inheritance . The place came as an allodial property to the Counts of Fürstenberg. The rule was established in 1806 by Act of Confederation in favor of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringens mediated , the place came under the sovereignty of the Prince of Hohenzollern. After the abolition of the Fürstenberg Obervogteiamt Jungnau in 1840, the place came to the Princely and Prussian Oberamt Straßberg , which was incorporated into the Hohenzollern Oberamt Sigmaringen in 1854 .

The Hohenrain farm, built in the middle of the 19th century, is located in the district. After Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern built a log house on the neighboring 780 m high vantage point in 1881, the area has been known as the Fürstenhöhe since 1897.

As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , the previously independent municipality of Oberschmeien was incorporated into the district town of Sigmaringen with effect from February 1, 1972 .
