The seat of the upper office was the former office building of the Buchau monastery. Today the building serves as the town hall of the community of Straßberg.

The Oberamt Straßberg was an administrative district in the south of what is now the German state of Baden-Württemberg . It existed under changing rulers until 1854, most recently from 1850 as the Prussian Oberamt in the Hohenzollern Lands .

history

In 1803, the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss abolished the Reichsstift Buchau and allocated its possessions, including the rule of Straßberg , to the Thurn und Taxis house , which established an upper office in Straßberg . As the rule in 1806 by Act of Confederation in favor of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringens mediated was kept Thurn und Taxis as Standesherr certain rights, the lower courts and the right to hunt. From then on, the upper office of Straßberg existed as a patrimonial office and Hohenzollern office under the sovereignty of the princes in Sigmaringen. In 1836, Thurn und Taxis sold the rulership, retroactively to July 1, 1835, to the Sigmaringen Hereditary Prince Karl Anton . Although the new owner was also assigned the rights of a civil register, the way was clear to enlarge the district, which had previously only comprised three towns, in 1840. After the transfer of sovereignty to Prussia in 1850, the Oberamt continued to exist as a Prussian authority until it was repealed by a decree of January 18, 1854. The communities were divided between the upper offices of Sigmaringen and Gammertingen .

Associated places

Initially, the Oberamt only included the villages of Straßberg, Kaiseringen and Frohnstetten . Around the year 1820 the district had around 1,500 inhabitants on an area of 40 square kilometers. By decree of October 15, 1840, the places Blättringen , Storzingen , Oberschmeien , Unterschmeien and Thiergarten were added from the dissolved Obervogteiamt Jungnau , and from the Oberamt Gammertingen the places Benzingen and Harthausen auf der Scher .
