geography

Geographical location

The Danube valley near Thiergarten

Thiergarten is located in the valley of the Upper Danube , around ten kilometers west of Sigmaringen .

geology

West of Thiergarten, between Falkenstein and Mittelberg, as Umlaufberg , is the former course of the Danube - the "Buttenloch" at 670  m above sea level. NN (today's Danube level 591  m ) - on the eastern part of which, following the end of the village, there is an open quarry from the 19th century. This was later operated by the “Karlsruhe Steinwerke” and subsequently by the “Schotterteufel” company. Italian guest workers worked here in the post-war years.

history

In 1933, Eduard Peters found around 9,000 tools, implements and jewelry from the Mesolithic cultural layer in the Falkenstein Cave, as well as the skeletal remains of a man around 30 to 40 years old with a height of more than 1.70 meters from the Mesolithic period (around 8000 to 5000 BC) BC) excavated. In the course of excavations it could be proven that the Mesolithic hunters also lived here from fishing. In addition to a number of typical fish species from the Danube such as nerfling, aitel, pike and huchen, pearl fish were also found.

Falkenstein ruins

The small village takes its name from a game reserve that Count Wilhelm von Zimmer zu Meßkirch had built in 1575 near his Falkenstein Castle . The former place "Weiler", it was mentioned for the first time in 1138, there is another testimony from the year 1275, disappeared again before the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) and was renamed "Thiergarten".

After the Lords of Zimmer died out, the area fell to the Fürstenberg dynasty . They had a smelting and hammer mill built here in 1670 with a workers' colony, some of whose houses are still standing today. The coal scrubber and the Gasthaus zum Hammer from 1789 are also reminiscent of the time; the plant was shut down in 1863. The ground ore extracted in the area , iron-containing weathering products of the Jurassic limestone, were used for smelting .

Thiergarten was divided up in 1806:
the part to the left of the Danube came to Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . On April 1, 1901, the village was assigned to the municipality of Vilsingen . As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg, Thiergarten was reclassified together with Vilsingen on January 1, 1975 to the municipality of Inzigkofen .
The part to the right of the Danube came to Baden . In 1890 he was assigned to the community of Gutenstein . This was incorporated into the district town of Sigmaringen on July 1, 1974 .
After hearing the residents, Thiergarten (both parts of the area) was reclassified to the municipality of Beuron on January 1, 1977.

Population development

In Thiergarten today there are significantly fewer inhabitants; in 1970 the place had 130 inhabitants, today there are only 85 (as of November 2011).

Historic "hammer building"
  • The St. George's Basilica of Thiergarten is the smallest three-aisled basilica north of the Alps. It was first mentioned in 1275. However, it was probably built around the year 1000 and is one of the oldest churches in the Danube valley between Tuttlingen and Sigmaringen. Originally built by the Falkenstein family, it is the ancient parish church of the village of Weiler, named after the church patron St. Georg. Since May 2010 it has housed a 300 year old Georgs statue from Switzerland. From 1671 to 1860 it served as the "smith's chapel". The chapel, romantically situated in a loop of the Danube, still serves as a place of worship and is also used as a wedding chapel.
  • The Käppeler estate also goes back to the village of Weiler. The building of the restaurant and the adjoining St. George's Basilica are witnesses of that time.
  • The historic hammer building was built in 1789 as a hammer forge and served as the administration building for the Hohenzollern hammer mill. It has been run as an inn since 1900. Most recently, it was operated as a cooking school with conference rooms for over 15 years under the name Villa Hammerschmiede . In winter 2009 it underwent a major renovation and opened in 2010 as a hostel for school classes, clubs and other groups. The owner is Maximilian Joachim zu Fürstenberg (* 1962).
  • The Falkenstein ruins are located in the Thiergarten district . Presumably as early as the 12th century the Falkensteiners, the Magenbuchers and the Bubenhofer maintained a fortification at this point. Traces go back to the 13th century. Its current building stock, the ship-shaped core of the castle, of which considerable parts of the masonry are still preserved, was built under Gottfried Werner von Zimmer 1516 to 1545. It is freely accessible and was restored by the Upper Danube Valley Ruin Protection Campaign . The "Falkensteiner Altar" by the master of Meßkirch is well known .
  • The Neumühle, located upstream from Thiergarten, was built in the 17th century from stones from Falkenstein Castle.
  • In Thiergarten there is an iron lamp that points to the former hut.
  • The hydropower plant in Thiergarten belongs to the Bundeswehr. It supplies the Bundeswehr location in Stetten on the cold market.

Natural monuments

  • The Thiergartener Bröller is a normally dry spring cave, the entrance of which was exposed in 1959. When the karst water level rises, the water bubbles out of the portal with a loud noise. It was dived in 1960 by Jochen Hasenmayer .
  • The Falkensteinwand and Rabenwand are approved for climbing and have several routes. Bad Man Rock , which is permitted for new tours, is in the immediate vicinity of the Bröller .
  • The Falkenstein Cave is a stalactite cave that is about two kilometers from the village.
  • The Amanda Cave is around 800 meters north of the village .

Economy and Infrastructure

education

In Thiergarten there was a village school with all classes. After the elementary school was separated into primary and secondary school, it was continued as a primary school until 1969.

traffic

Landesstraße 277 (Donautalstraße) and the Tuttlingen – Inzigkofen railway run through the village . The former Thiergarten (Hohenz.) Train station , where goods were also loaded, is now privately owned.

Thiergarten is located on the Danube Cycle Path , which leads from the source of the Danube via Passau and Budapest to the mouth of the Black Sea .
