Unterfalkenstein

Unterfalkenstein is the ruin of a rock castle in the municipality of Beuron in the district of Sigmaringen in Baden-Württemberg .

location

The castle ruins are located on two rocks about 100 meters to the west and 26 meters below the Oberfalkenstein castle ruins . The rock outcrop is located in the Obere Donau Nature Park to the left above the Danube between the districts of Neidingen and Thiergarten , opposite the Neumühle in the valley below.

description

The castle was built around 1100 to 1150 after ceramic finds, mentioned in a document in 1213, destroyed in 1407 (according to later reports by an earthquake) and called the Burgstall around 1500 .

The Lords of Falkenstein are named as the builders of the castle. Around 1362 the Lenzenberg property and the nearby Falkenstein Castle were in the hands of the Lords of Magenbuch. On October 3, 1390, Albrecht von Magenbuch sold Linczenberg das burgstall with accessories and the two castles of Oberstein and Unterfalkenstein to Heinrich von Bubenhofen .

The castle complex was built on two rocks that were connected by a wooden bridge. Like the nearby Schloss Hausen in the valley , there was a compact, small inner castle on a rock pillar . Whether this encompassed the entire plateau with an area of 15 × 16.5 meters, or whether the wall enclosed a building with a small courtyard, can no longer be clearly determined due to the remains of the wall. An upstream Stack served as the forecastle . Some of the wall remains of this are also preserved.

The rock head with the remains of the main castle (building remains and well-preserved remains of the north wall) is not freely accessible, climbing is prohibited.
