Franz Magnus Hops (born September 6, 1717 in Mietingen ; † January 3 or 14, 1756 in Sigmaringen ) was a German sculptor .

life and work

Franz Magnus Hops was one of twelve children of the sculptor Johannes Hops ; his siblings were Johann Adam and Josef Anton Hops . His teacher is said to have been Joseph Christian from Riedlingen .

On May 22, 1741, he married Katharina Carle from Hitzkofen in Sigmaringen . With this he had eight children between 1742 and 1755, but all of them died young. His workshop later apparently passed to Johann Baptist Hops .

In a source from 1751 he is referred to as an “artful high-princely sculptor”; at that time he bought the middle floor of the Gasthaus zum Adler in Sigmaringen.

Franz Magnus Hops mainly worked as an ornamentist. The characteristic features of his works include the latticework, flamed volutes and the icicle motif. According to Thieme / Becker, he decorated the high altar in Mietingen, the Madonna of which came from his father. In 1750 he decorated the high altar in Donaueschingen , whose figures of St. Joseph and Anna may also come from him, as well as the case for the Infant Jesus of Prague in the princely oratory. His works also include the jewelry on the organ case in Heidenhofen as well as the reliquary of the side altar in Meßkirch and a carved wooden frame for an Ecce Homo picture in Bettenbrunn . The altars and pulpit in Langenenslingen from 1748/55 have not been preserved .

Ulrike Kern names other works by Hops: According to Kern, the altar sculptures in the former Franciscan monastery church in Hedingen come from Hops as well as the altar furnishings in the Haigerloch Castle Church and the pulpit ornaments there, the decoration of the choir stalls and the cheeks of the stalls, which he made around 1748/50 created. Since Hops apparently often worked with the painter Meinrad von Au , Kern advocates examining churches in which works by this painter can be found for their plastic jewelry. It is possible that further works by Franz Magnus Hop can be discovered.

Meinrad von Au and Franz Magnus Hops were also active in the parish church of St. Mauritius in Langenenslingen. The latter provided the high altar in 1748. Before he could finish the side altars, he died. They were completed by his younger brother Josef Anton Hops. As already mentioned, the Langenenslinger altars have not been preserved. From 1751 Meinrad von Au and Franz Magnus Hops worked on furnishing the parish church of St. Jakob in Pfullendorf ; Among other things, Hops carved a Madonna, the choir stalls as well as a Maria and a Johannes for this church. From 1752 to 1754 he was probably busy making the altars in Rangendingen .
