Johann Adam Hops (born July 31, 1708 in Mietingen ; † around 1775) was a German sculptor .

Life and works

Johann Adam Hops was the oldest of twelve children of the sculptor Johannes Hops and his wife Margarethe, b. Ehrmann or Ehrenmann. He probably completed his training with his father. He married before 1732. Resident in Mietingen at least until his marriage, Hops sought citizenship in Sigmaringen on October 5, 1736 , which he also received.

Hops' works include a figure of St. Joseph with baby Jesus in the castle chapel in Dellmensingen , which has the signature “J. Adam Hobs 1730 ”, as well as a saint Johannes Nepomuk in the Laupheim parish church, whose signature is“ JAH 1734 ”. The Dellmensinger figure, described by Thieme / Becker as being there, had apparently changed its location in 1986. Ulrike Kern explained in her essay about the Hops family of sculptors that she did not know where Joseph had got to with the baby Jesus. In return, she found that a number of sculptures in the Mietingen church go back to Johann Adam Hops: an Anna herself and a saint Nepomuk, who has his place in the sacristy. She also names a saint Nepomuk in Hüttisheimfrom 1734 as well as an Anna with Marienkind in Äpfingen , a grave Christ in the Laupheimer Leonhardskapelle and a Christ from 1764 in the Laupheimer Heimatmuseum.

Johann Adam Hops is regarded as a less important artist than some of his family members; In contrast to his two well-known brothers Franz Magnus and Josef Anton , however, he had descendants who carried on the family's artistic legacy: among his twelve children were two sons who in turn became sculptors.
