The church stands on the site of a castle chapel from the 11th century, consecrated to St. James and Christophorus . Enlarged at the beginning of the 14th century, the chapel belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Königsbronn since 1348 . In the middle of the 15th century until 1480/81 a new building was built as a Gothic pillar basilica, in which the Salem builder Hans von Savoyen (Hans Saphoi) was involved. In 1750/51 the church was redesigned in baroque style .

inner space

The church interior is decorated with colorful ceiling frescoes and murals, opulent stucco work, numerous putti and figures of saints. The stucco was by Johann Georg Graf in the choir and Johann Jakob Schwarzmann in the nave, the painting by Meinrad von Ow .

Rosary altar

In 1615, the sculptor Martin Zürn created a rosary altar for the Rosary Brotherhood in the south aisle . The altar consisted of a large figure of Mary in the center, surrounded by round relief medallions with scenes from the life of Mary and Christ, side by side figures of the kneeling St. Dominic and James. This altar was replaced in the Baroque style in 1751 by a smaller one with a statue of the Virgin by Franz Magnus Hops and moved from the south to the north aisle in 1892. Here summarized Franz Joseph Simmler the saints new, 1901 the Mother of God figure. The rosary reliefs were then restored by Simmler and his successors, the Moroder brothers, and five reliefs were completely re-carved.

One of the most valuable figures is that of the church patron Jakobus, which Johann Felizian Hegauer created in 1717. The baroque altars were created by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer , the choir stalls by Franz Magnus Hops.

The interior renovation, which was divided into several construction phases, took several years, and the exposure of the six baroque images of the apostles in the upper storey was very complex . The original motifs were painted over in the 19th century. Missing putti have been replaced in the pulpit. The celebration altar and ambo were replaced by new acquisitions in 2004.

Former interior

organ

The organ of Winfried Albiez 1974 in a baroque housing has 30 registers with 2,872 pipes to (3 manuals and Pedal ; mechanical key action, electric key action ). In 2010 the organ was cleaned up, repaired and its sound modified.

Peal

The bells of the parish church are housed in the bell tower . It consists of six bells: a bell from 1673 by Melchior Maurer and Johann Baptist Ernst, a bell from 1795 by Felix Koch from Salem and four bells from 1950 by Benjamin Grüninger from Neu-Ulm. The striking mechanism was changed so that the clock was moved to the four bells from the 1950s in order to protect the historical bells.
