As a master of Pfullendorfer altar one is late Gothic painter called. The artist, whose name is not certain, painted an altar around 1500 which is said to come from the parish church of St. Jakob in Pfullendorf and which gave the master his emergency name . The panels with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the life of Christ as well as pictures of prophets, which are still preserved today, are considered to be important works of the working method shaped by the Ulm painting of the epoch.

The Pfullendorfer Altar was probably a two meter long winged altar. The painted outside is almost completely destroyed. The still preserved, divided 16 panel paintings on the inside are now in the possession of three museums:

Stylistic closeness

The work of the master of the Pfullendorfer Altar is close to the style of late medieval painting grouped as the Ulm School . In particular, there is at least one stylistic relationship between the master and the painter Bartholomäus Zeitblom , who works in Ulm , even if the pictures of the Pfullendorfer Altar show a more clearly defined spatiality.

identification

It was proposed to equate the master of the Pfullendorfer Altar with the painter Bernhard Strigel from Memmingen.
