The Campeonato Cabo-verdiano de Futebol is the national football championship of the West African island republic of Cape Verde .

history

Cape Verde has been a Portuguese colony since its discovery and settlement by Portugal in 1456 . This is how football came to the islands with the Portuguese.

Masters have been determined in Cape Verde since 1939 and championships have been played since 1953. In 1975 the country gained independence from Portugal .

Today's championship mode was essentially established in 1974 and first carried out in 1976.

In 1981 the Cape Verde Football Association, the Federação Caboverdiana de Futebol , was founded and has been organizing the Campeonato ever since.

execution

The championship is played as a tournament by twelve clubs between the previous year's champions and the eleven champions of the Ligas Insulares , the leagues of the nine islands (the tenth island of Santa Luzia is uninhabited). The two largest islands Santiago and Santo Antão are divided into a southern (on Santiago with the capital Praia) and a northern league.
