Le fils du Français (Eng .: "The Frenchman's Son") is a French adventure film with Fanny Ardant and Josiane Balasko from 1999.

action

Since the death of his mother, the nine-year-old Benjamin has lived in Paris alternately with his grandmothers, Anne and Suzanne. These can't stand each other and couldn't be more different. Anne is a wealthy, cultured singing teacher, while Suzanne, a caretaker, smokes a lot, steals from people and likes to cheat at poker. Benjamin's father Christian is meanwhile in South America , where he has been looking for gold for two years.

One day Benjamin receives a letter from his father inviting him to Brazil to live with him. His grandmothers, who are constantly fighting, accompany Benjamin on his journey. When they arrive at Christian's house in Brazil, there is no trace of the host. Benjamin finally admits that shortly before their departure he received a call from his father asking him to cancel the meeting. They finally learn from a neighbor that Christian was last in the small village of Santa Rita. But when Benjamin, Anne and Suzanne arrive there, they only find Christian's assistant Jean. He informs them that Christian suddenly left for Paris without explaining the circumstances to him, so as not to endanger him unnecessarily.

When two armed men try to kidnap Benjamin, and his grandmothers are barely able to prevent it, they and Jean flee into the Brazilian jungle. There Anne and Suzanne have to reluctantly pull themselves together. On their way through the jungle they meet Indians who they invite to their village. Their chief immediately casts an eye on Suzanne and wants to make her his wife in a ceremony. The next morning, the four French sneak out of the village and head back into the jungle. On the way they are found by Aureliano, a landowner, and his daughter Iracema. Aureliano brings them to his country house and proves to be a generous host. He is also a passionate singer. Together with Anne he practices opera arias on the piano, both of them come closer. When the Indians reach the property armed, Benjamin, Jean, Anne and Suzanne have to flee again. However, the helicopter that is supposed to bring them to safety belongs to their real pursuers, who previously wanted to kidnap Benjamin. From these they are now flown to a base and held there.

They are saved by the chief of the Indians who followed them and by the action of the Brazilian army. As it turns out, Christian had witnessed a drug mafia murder. But since he was arrested by the police for diamond smuggling, the drug dealers could not kill him, so they tried to silence him by kidnapping his son. When Christian is released from prison, Benjamin, Anne, Suzanne, Jean and Aureliano are waiting for him in a car. They drive away together.

criticism

Lisa Nesselson from Variety said that this “conventional” jungle adventure was “undemanding food”. The first half hour is "still relatively lively, but the local color and the angry nerves wear off long before the bizarre finale". Fanny Ardant and Josiane Balasko, who were “deliberately older and rickety” in the film, would have offered “brave ideas”.
