The GFA League First Division is the top division in football in Gambia and has been played since 1940.

Game mode

Twelve teams compete against each other in a round trip. The team that takes first place at the end of the second half of the season is Gambian football champions. The master receives 75,000 Dalasi (D) and each team involved 10,000 D (as of June 2011).

history

The league was started in 1940 in the British colony of Gambia as the "Bathurst League 1940" , these clubs all came from the capital Bathurst (renamed Banjul in 1973 ). There is conflicting information about the clubs, according to one source: Augustians , East End Lions, Dingareh , Hotspur, School XI, Young Lions, Gambia United , RAF, Navy, MSU, Heroes and Black Diamonds . Another source lists the following teams: Police FC (MSU?), Medical XI (presumably Medical School XI), Gambia Regiment, UAC and Rainbow .

For the 1967/68 season, the number of clubs was increased to eight. The number of clubs involved was increased to eleven in the Gambia 1974/75 season. In the following 1975/76 season, the number was reduced to six clubs. In the 1990s, the championship was played again among ten clubs. In 2008, the Gambia Football Association (GFA) increased the number of participating teams from ten to twelve.
