The Campeonato Santomense de Futebol is the national soccer championship of the African island state São Tomé and Príncipe .

history

The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe were a Portuguese colony from their discovery and settlement by the Portuguese from 1471 until their independence in 1975 . Football in São Tomé and Príncipe is therefore shaped to this day by its Portuguese origins and relationships, for example by branches of Portuguese clubs, in particular Sporting Lisbon .

The football association Federação Santomense de Futebol (FSF) was founded in 1975, the year of independence from Portugal. Since 1977 he has organized the national championship, the Campeonato Santomense de Futebol .

execution

The FSF leads a top island league on the larger island of São Tomé ( Liga Insular de São Tomé , also Primeira Divisão de São Tomé ). There the twelve clubs play a championship in two legs. The two lowest clubs in the final table are relegated to the single-track second division, the Segunda Divisão de São Tomé . The master qualifies for the final round of the national championship.

On the smaller island of Príncipe , the FSF also runs a top league, the Liga Insular de Príncipe (also Primeira Divisão ). The six clubs in the league play a championship in two legs. The last-placed club is relegated to the second division, the Segunda Divisão . The master qualifies for the final round of the national championship,

In the final round of the national championship, the actual Campeonato Santomense de Futebol , the champions of the two island leagues compete against each other in a return match. Away goals count twice.

In a few years the championship was suspended, as a result of politically unstable situations in the country or the association's financial hardship. So far, the title has gone to clubs from São Tomé 23 times, eight titles have gone to Príncipe Island.

Most successful clubs

The record winner of the Campeonato Santomense is the Club Sporting Clube Praia Cruz with 8 titles, followed by Vitória Futebol Clube de Riboque with 5 championships and Grupo Desportivo Os Operário with 4 titles (as of 2018). The UDRA de Angolares won the national championship for the first time in 2014 .
