Moçambola (or Campeonato Moçambicano de Futebol , Portuguese for Mozambican Football Championship ) is the top division of football in Mozambique . The season typically runs from March to September. In addition to the championship, there is also a cup competition, the Taça de Moçambique .
history
Since 1922, the Lourenço Marques district championship has been held in the then Portuguese colony of Mozambique . In 1956 the first national championship of the Portuguese overseas province Mozambique took place, in which the champions of the eleven districts met the best teams of the capital Lourenço Marques . The capital club Clube Ferroviário de Lourenço Marques secured the first national championship .
After independence (1975), Textáfrica do Chimoio won the first championship in 1976, for which it initially remained the only championship title.
In 1998 there was no championship ceremony because the championship was not held for the first time after the calendar year.
From the 2000/01 season, a single-track league with twelve teams was founded for the first time under the name Liga 2M . Since 2002 the league has been played according to the calendar year again. In 2005 the name was changed to the name Moçambola, which is still valid today . From 2007 to 2015 the league played with 14 teams and since the 2016 season with 16 teams.
Game system
The Moçambola consists of 16 teams, with all teams playing against each other in the first and second leg. The team that has the most points after 30 match days becomes the Mozambican soccer champion, which also qualifies for the CAF Champions League . The three teams with the worst points relegate to the second division, the Segunda Divisão .
