There is evidence that football has been played in what is now Burkina Faso since 1935. The clubs were integrated into colonial structures and took part in the Coupe d'AOF , the cup competition of the French West Africa colonial federation , in the 1950s . After independence from France in 1960, a national championship was immediately created for the new state of Upper Volta . The first master was ASF Bobo-Dioulasso . In 1964 USFRAN Bobo-Dioulasso managed to defend his title for the first time.
In 1974, by decision of the sports minister Félix Tiemtarboum, a championship was created based on regional selections that were to play for the national title in place of club teams. The aim was to join forces in order to be more successful in the continental club competitions. This decision sparked polemics and divided public opinion. With seven titles in a row, the Silures Bobo-Dioulasso were more successful than the rival selection Kadiogo Club Ouagadougou , which was coached in the late 1970s by the German Otto Pfister , who also acted as national coach. With some successes, this system also led to frustration among those responsible for the individual clubs and had no future. The seasons 1981 and 1982 did not take place due to political turbulence. In the ten years between 1985 and 1994, Étoile Filante Ouagadougou was able to win eight championship titles. ASFA-Yennenga Ouagadougou has been the dominant force since 1999, with ten championship titles until 2013.
