Upper Volta (French Haute-Volta , after the river Volta ), today Burkina Faso , was a French colony in West Africa from 1919 to 1932 . As the economic development fell short of the expectations of the mother country, the territory was divided in 1932 among the neighboring colonies of French Sudan , Niger and Ivory Coast . After the Second World War, France rearranged its colonial possessions and in 1947 restored Upper Volta within its old borders as an overseas territory. The women's suffrage was introduced 1956th On December 11, 1958, Upper Volta received internal autonomy. On August 5, 1960 Upper Volta was given independence. On August 4, 1984, it changed its name to Burkina Faso. The country lies in the greater Sudan and Sahel region ; it borders Ghana , Mali , Niger, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Benin . The capital was and is Ouagadougou .
