Dori is a city and a department encompassing the same area in the north of the West African state of Burkina Faso . It is the capital of the Sahel region and the province of Séno ; the main town is divided into eight sectors, the area of the municipality ( French commune urbaine ) includes 78 villages, which together with the main town have 106,808 inhabitants.
The Dargol River originates east of the city center and flows eastwards to the Niger .
The Dori market serves to supply the northern parts of the country, which are populated by the Tuareg and Fulbe , among others .
During the 19th century Dori was the capital of the Fulani emirate Liptako . The first European to set foot on Dori was probably the German Africa explorer Heinrich Barth in 1853.
Dori is the seat of the Diocese of Dori .
