Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo

Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo (born June 30, 1942 in Kaya ) is a Burkinabe politician who was president of Upper Volta, today's Burkina Faso , from 1982 to 1983 .

Ouédraogo is a Catholic and belongs to the Mossi , the largest population group in the Upper Volta, France at that time . He studied medicine in the Ivory Coast and France . From 1976 to 1977 he was chief physician in the children's department of a hospital in the capital Ouagadougou . Then he went to Mulhouse until 1981 and specialized in pediatrics . On his return from France in February 1982 he was appointed chief physician at the Ouagadougou Military Hospital.

On November 7, 1982 Saye Zerbo, who had come to power in a coup in 1980, was overthrown in another coup. Major Dr. Ouédraogo became chairman of the ruling military council Conseil du Salut du Peuple (CSP) and head of state and government on November 26th. Captain Thomas Sankara took over the latter position in January 1983 . He was released by Ouédraogo on May 17, 1983 because of suspected sympathy for Libya and temporarily detained.

At the end of May, Ouédraogo announced a new constitution and elections within three months, the CSP was dissolved. His term of office was ended on August 4, 1983 by a new coup, which was organized by the later President Blaise Compaoré with the help of Libya and made Sankara Ouédraogo's successor.

Further career

Ouédraogo returned to medicine and on May 14, 1992 founded the Notre-Dame de la Paix clinic in Ouagadougou. The ex-President Sangoulé Lamizana , ousted by Zerbo in 1980, died on May 27, 2005 at the age of 89 in this clinic.
