Gilbert Diendéré (* 1960 or 1961) is a Burkinabe general in the Burkina Faso military . For many years he was Blaise Compaoré's highest confidante during his time as head of state of the country from 1987 to 2014. He was also head of the Presidential Guard ( Régiment de sécurité présidentielle , RSP).

On 17 September 2015 he was selected by a junta to President of Burkina proclaimed after a day earlier on September 16, 2015, the detention of President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida was run. On September 17, Diendéré was appointed chairman of the National Council for Democracy ( Président du Conseil national de la démocratie ), the new military junta.

On September 24, 2015, Kafando and Zida returned to their offices, marking the end of the coup. Diendéré apologized for the coup that resulted in ten deaths in the Burkinabe capital. Diendéré affirmed that he wanted to stand before a possible trial on his role and responsibility during the coup.

He is in custody for his role in the failed coup and now has to answer for involvement in the death of Thomas Sankara on October 15, 1987. In December 2016 it was announced that the proceedings would be suspended until spring 2017 [obsolete] due to too many incidents .
