Isaac Yacouba Zida (born November 16, 1965 in Yako , Upper Volta , today Burkina Faso ) is a senior officer in the Burkina Faso army, was head of state of Burkina Faso at the beginning of November 2014 and was from November 19, 2014 to December 29, 2015 with a Interruption in September 2015 by the acting Burkinabe head of government.

Life

After studying English at the University of Ouagadougou , Zida became a professional soldier from 1989. He interrupted his military career during his studies at the University of Lyon III in international management , which he successfully completed with a master's degree. From 1993 he was in the elite garrison of the Burkina Faso army in . In 1996 he moved to the presidential guard, the Régiment de sécurité présidentielle (RSP). Between 2008 and 2009 he served as a blue helmet soldier in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , and since 2011 he has been deputy commander of the Presidential Guard.

After Blaise Compaoré was ousted , Zida claimed power in Burkina Faso on November 1, 2014, practically at the same time as the Army Chief of Staff, Honoré Nabéré Traoré . On the same day, the army leadership stood behind the lieutenant colonel .

After the civilian and former Foreign Minister Michel Kafando came to power , Zida was appointed head of government on November 19, 2014.

On the afternoon of September 16, 2015, armed members of the Régiment de sécurité présidentielle (RSP), the former Praetorian Guard of the deposed President Compaoré, stormed a government meeting in Ouagadougou. They arrested Zida and interim president Kafando and took them away. Three days earlier, the National Reconciliation Commission had decided to dissolve the presidential guard, which had been barracked up until then. RSP soldiers also occupied the studios of several private radio stations and switched off the transmission systems. The programs of the foreign service of the French radio are also affected. A day later, a soldier announced on state television that the transitional government had been removed from office and that the military had taken power in the country. The coup took place less than a month before planned presidential elections, in which Compaoré's party Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès (CDP) is excluded. On September 18, the leader of the putschists, General Gilbert Diendéré, released Kafando and almost the entire cabinet. Diendéré denied contacts with Compaoré and planned to meet with the presidents of Benin and Senegal, Boni Yayi and Macky Sall , on the same day . The national borders that have been closed since the beginning of the coup have also been reopened. On September 24, 2015, Zida returned to office, which marked the end of the coup. On January 6, 2016, Paul Kaba Thieba became the new Prime Minister of Burkina Faso. Zida is married and has three children.
