The flag of Upper Volta , today's West African state of Burkina Faso , was a horizontal tricolor in black, white and red. It was adopted on December 9, 1959, and retained when France gained independence on August 5, 1960.

When the country was renamed Burkina Faso on August 4, 1984, a new flag was introduced.

The colors of the flag of Upper Volta are derived from the three main rivers of the country, Black Volta , White Volta and Red Volta . The flag is similar to the black-white-red flag of the German Empire .
