The Championnat National is the top division of the Fédération Togolaise de Football , the national football association of Togo .
history
The Championnat National de Première Division was founded in 1961 shortly after Togo's independence . A football championship had already been held in the former colony, and Togolese teams also took part in the Coupe d'AOF . The winner of the Première Division qualifies for the CAF Champions League (formerly African Cup of Champions Clubs ). The runner-up in Togo took part in the CAF Confederation Cup until 2015 .
In 1974 there was a reform in which many clubs were merged into larger units . Four superclubs emerged in the capital Lomé , including Lomé 1 from Etoile Filante , Modèle and Dynamic Togolais . In 1978 these club structures were dissolved and the old clubs restored. Until 1980, the championship was first held in regional areas, from 1981 onwards it was held in a national league. Some seasons were canceled or canceled, for example the Première Division 2000 was not played to the end due to financial difficulties. The 2003/04 season saw the changeover to multi-year gaming operations. The season originally scheduled for March 2003 was postponed to September 2003 and ended in July 2004. After the 2008 season was canceled, the 2009 season was played within one calendar year Championship again. 2011/12 was switched back to multi-year gaming operations, but abolished after just one season. The 2015 season was supposed to start on August 8, 2015 and was later postponed to September 12, 2015. After no games had taken place by the end of 2015, this season was also canceled and the start of the 2016/17 season was announced on September 11, 2016.
