The Namibia Premier League (NPL) was the top division in football in Namibia from 1990 to 2020 . The NPL is a semi-professional league .
In 1992 it was recognized by the Namibia Football Association (NFA). At the beginning of October 2019, the NPL as an organization was suspended following a decision by the NFA and FIFA and finally excluded on July 18, 2020.
The only double from the championship and the cup was won by the African Stars in 2010 and 2018 .
history
A joint league of whites and blacks has only existed since 1977 due to apartheid. Before that, parallel leagues took place, with the champions of the White League qualifying for the South African Premier Soccer League . The league has only been held under the umbrella of the Namibia Premier League since 1990 .
Name history
From its foundation in 1990 until the 2007/2008 season, the Namibia Premier League has been sponsored by the so-called The Football Consortium , consisting of the Namibian companies First National Bank of Namibia (FNB), Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) and Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL). Under their sponsorship , the Namibia Premier League had different names, including a. also Tafel Lager Premier League , named after the popular Namibian beer.
Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) has been the sole sponsor since the 2008/2009 season and has thus acquired the naming rights. Since then the league has been officially called the "MTC Namibia Premier League" and, in short, "MTC Premiership". In 2016/17, MTC left the NPL as the main sponsor, but returned for the 2017/18 season and is now finally discontinuing its commitment after the 2019/20 season.
League mode
There were 16 teams in the Premier League until 2009 and since 2014/15. In between only 12 teams were represented in Namibia's top division. An interim increase to 14 teams was rejected in June 2011.
The three-point rule customary in FIFA applies .
The team that takes first place at the end of the second half of the season is Namibian football champions. The last two are relegated to the First Division .
Changed mode from 2013/2014
For the first time in the 2013/2014 season there was a relegation match between the eleventh-placed team in the Namibia Premier League and a team from the three regional leagues of the Namibia First Division selected by lottery. From the 2014/2015 season, as in 2009, 16 teams played in the Namibia Premier League. These were
- the 10 best teams of the Namibia Premier League season 2013/2014,
- the eleventh-placed team of the Namibia Premier League season 2013/2014, provided they win their relegation game, otherwise the winner of the relegation game
- the three regional champions of the Namibia First Division from the 2013/2014 season
- a team that won second place in the table in one of the three regional championships of the Namibia First Division in the 2013/2014 season as well as the relegation game.
