Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) is a Namibian wireless operator. Operations started in 1995 and MTC had a monopoly until March 2007.

MTC is considered an innovation company on the African continent. It was the first company in Africa to introduce the LTE / 4G 2012 and LTE-Advanced / 4.5G 2016 wireless standard . In 2018, the introduction of the 5G standard , also in cooperation with Huawei , was promised. MTC was the main sponsor of the Namibia Premier League for 14 years until after the 2019/20 season, with the exception of the 2016/17 season, and is investing more than 150 million Namibian dollars

Ownership structures

MTC is 66 percent in state-owned Namibian hands ( Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings ) and 34 percent is owned by Samba Luxco from Luxembourg . By 2004, 51 percent were state-owned and 49 percent owned by the Swedish companies Swedfund and Telia .

The takeover of the 34 minority percentages by the Namibian state NPTH is planned (as of March 2018). As competition edition has Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia the immediate sale of 20 percent stake in the state pension fund GIPF and the placement of 29 percent of shares in the Namibian Stock Exchange made within a year.

MTC has around 2.454 million active SIM cards (2017) and thus reaches more than 100% of the population of Namibia. The network coverage in the population is over 95%, but is to be expanded to 100% by 2021.

MTC operates a GSM 900/1800 network and supports EDGE , UMTS and HSDPA and offers numerous product solutions such as B. Homezone . In addition, MTC offers the fastest Internet connections in Namibia with its “Netman” product.
