The Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) is a beer brewery from Windhoek in Namibia .

History and background

The brewery was founded in 1920 by Carl List and Hermann Ohlthaver as Südwestbrauerei (SWB). In 1967 the Hansa brewery from Swakopmund joined the SWB. Under the German master brewer Günther Schulz, who was responsible for production from 1966 to 1978, the brewery was modernized and international prizes were won as early as the 1970s.

After Namibia's independence , the Südwestbrauerei received its current name on March 21, 1990.

Since 1999 there has been a cooperation with the Beck & Co. brewery from Bremen . In 2003, a cooperation with Heineken and Diageo resulted in the sale of 28.9 percent of the NBL, which is now listed on the Namibia Stock Exchange, to these two companies. The Ohlthaver & List Group still owns the majority of the company with 51 percent.

The associated Hansa brewery in Swakopmund was closed in October 2005.

In January 2014 NBL took over the Namibian microbrewery Camelthorn Brewing and launched its own wheat beer for the first time in June 2014 under the name Camelthorn Weizen .

Production, products and markets

The NBL brews its own beers, with the exception of King Lager , according to the regulations of the German Purity Law and received awards from the DLG when the Windhoek Lager was first tested . In addition, Vigo and Code are bringing their own soft drinks onto the market.

Around 60 percent of production is currently exported to South Africa and 23 other countries around the world. The NBL has been expanding internationally since the beginning of 2010 with the aim of becoming one of the top 15 beers in the world within 15 months. The newest country to be marketed was Cameroon on February 17, 2010 and Great Britain on May 19, 2010. Windhoek Draft has also been exported to Tanzania since the beginning of March 2014.
