Carl List

Carl List (* 1880 in Germany ; † 1959 in Windhoek , South West Africa , today Namibia ) was a German-Namibian entrepreneur and banker in what was then the German protected area German South West Africa . Together with Hermann Ohlthaver, List was the founder of the largest private company in the country today (June 2017) , the Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies (O&L).

Carl List emigrated to what is now Namibia in 1906 as an employee of the Berliner Bank . He founded the Deutsche Afrika-Bank and sold it to Barclays Bank in 1919 . List was married and had three children, including Werner List , who later took over the management of O&L.

Trivia

A shopping arcade (Carl List Mall) and a commercial building above Carl List House (today Alexander Forbes House ) in Windhoek are named after Carl List .
