O&L Leisure (Hotels & Lodges) (registered as O and L Leisure (Proprietary) Limited ) based in Windhoek is a hotel company in Namibia that emerged from Namib Sun Hotels and is part of the Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies , the largest private company in the country, founded in 1919 .

history

As early as 1937, the company Ohlthaver & List (O&L) , founded in 1919 by Hermann Ohlthaver and Carl List , acquired the Midgard and Okatjemise farms . In 1988 the company built the Mokuti Lodge on the edge of the Etosha National Park .

In 1995 the Mokuti Lodge , which belongs to the O&L subsidiary Namib Sun Hotels, received 5 stars and has been Namibia's best lodge for years. At that time, the portfolio of the Namib Sun Hotels also included the Midgard Lodge, the Ghaub Guest Farm, the Strand Hotel in Swakopmund and the Thüringer Hof in Windhoek , which were built in the mid-1950s .

In 2003, Namib Sun Hotels also took over the Zambezi River Lodge and King's Den Lodge in the Caprivi region from Gerhardus and Alta Visagie. In 2004, Henry Feris became General Manager of Namib Sun Hotels and expanded the company to include the hunting safari operator Namib Sun. Hunting safaris with the associated Katenba and Otjiwa hunting ranches, each with 28,000 hectares of land, which were completely rebuilt according to international standards for this purpose. When the Otjiwa Lodge was reopened in 2006, Namibian Prime Minister Nahas Angula described the lodge as a central element for branding Namibia as a destination for premium tourism . Otjiwa is the oldest lodge in Namibia.

In 2007, the Ohlthaver & List Group agreed a joint venture with IFA Hotel und Touristik AG and their partner Kempinski Hotels SA . The agreement encompassed the joint development and marketing of the hotels of the Sun Hotel Group, which for this purpose were combined into the joint OLIFA Hotels & Resorts Ltd. was convicted. Bruce Hutchison became managing director and Shepherd Chinhoi general manager. The new company was to build a new hotel in Windhoek and the replacement building for the Strand Hotel in Swakopmund as well as the renovations of the Chobe King's Den Lodge and the Mokuti Lodge , while Kempinski would implement the O&L locations Mokuti Lodge and Mokuti Country Estate as well as both Should operate new hotel buildings at 5-star level.

As part of the realignment, O&L Leisure was founded on February 16, 2007 . In 2008, Namib Sun Hotels sold the Hotel Thüringer Hof to the United Africa Group ( Protea Hotels ; today Protea Hotels by Mariott ). In the same year the Strand Hotel in Swakopmund was closed and demolished.

In 2010 IFA ended their cooperation for financial reasons and O&L acquired their shares in OLIFA. Until 2012 only the upgrading of the Mokuti Lodge had been implemented and this and the Midgard Country Estate were operated by Kempinski. As a result, O&L ended its partnership with the Kempinski Hotels Group in a dispute over its alignment as a premium hotel group. Kempinski then withdrew from Namibia and the Midgard and Mokuti lodges returned to full responsibility of the hotel operator O&L Leisure Hotels & Lodges, which also continued to operate the new hotel in Swakopmund. The plans for the new hotel building in Windhoek were given up.

In 2015 the Strand Hotel Swakopmund was reopened after a long planning period and two years of construction . The old Strand Hotel , built in the mid-1950s and demolished in 2008, stood in the same place. In October 2015, the beach hotel developer Bruce Hutchison resigned shortly before the opening and left Namibia. Terence Makari took over the management of the company in 2019 . The Chobe Water Villas hotel complex was opened in July 2016 .

Norbert Wurm has headed the company since mid-2019 .
