The Allgemeine Zeitung consciously sees itself as a Namibian newspaper. It is designed by around ten editors; the majority of the employees are native and naturalized Namibians. The newspaper has a liberal-conservative orientation.

With a print run of around 5000 copies (Mondays to Thursdays, 12 to 16 pages) to around 6000 copies (Fridays, up to 32 pages) (as of March 2013), the AZ is used in almost all German-speaking households in Namibia (with around 20,000 people) read. A few hundred newspapers also go to South Africa and - especially the larger Friday edition - to ex-Namibians and friends in Germany. In 1991 the newspaper was bought by Namibia Media Holdings (NMH). The editor-in-chief between 2004 and 2018 was Stefan Fischer , who was chief editor at Cottbuser Märkischer Boten until 2002 . He modernized the distribution and layout of the newspaper, which increased its circulation considerably. Since 2004 it has been possible to generate profits, three quarters of which are from advertising revenues. In addition to the Allgemeine Zeitung , NMH's own printing company, Newsprint Namibia, prints the Afrikaans-language sister newspaper Die Republikein and the Namibian Sun , among others . Frank Steffen has been editor-in-chief since April 2018 .

The reports from the agencies Reuters , Deutsche Presse-Agentur and Transocean GmbH were used for the news service .

history

Lettering and slogan of the Allgemeine Zeitung until January 11, 2013

The Allgemeine Zeitung was founded on July 22, 1916 under the name Der Kriegsbote and provided information about the events of the First World War . When, as a result of the war, the colony of German South West Africa came under the administration of the League of Nations , which it exercised on the basis of a mandate from the South African Union , it was renamed to its current name on July 1, 1919.

In 1937 the newspaper was published by John Meinert Ltd. relocated. The newspaper, which was published every day except Sundays, had a circulation of around 1,800. The newspaper was read by Germans in Windhoek and the surrounding area. The newspaper's subtitle said at the time that the newspaper stood up for the interests of Germanness . From 1939 the paper was temporarily titled Deutscher Beobachter: Newspaper of the Germans South West Africa , which changed back to its old name in 1942. That came from a change of ownership. The German Southwest Federation , founded in 1937 and under the influence of infiltrated National Socialists, acquired the publisher and the newspaper was given a different name, as mentioned. The Swakopmund newspaper was also bought up and then discontinued. As a result, the German observer was the only German-language newspaper in South West Africa at the time.

Other print media that emerged as side editions of the newspaper Der Farmer , the Volksblatt owned by the Workers' Association for South West Africa, the Karakul breeder founded in 1933 and Heimat as the German Protestant community newspaper for Africa. In 1978, Diether Lauenstein became the owner of the newspaper before joining DMH (now NMH) in 1991.

Since January 14, 2013 the Allgemeine Zeitung appears in a completely revised look. The slogan was changed from Oldest Daily Newspaper Namibias - Nachrichten in good German to Aktuell, Mittendrin, Für Dich .
