The Camelthorn Brewing Company was an independent beer brewery in Windhoek , the capital of Namibia . It was taken over by Namibia Breweries at the end of January 2014 .
founding
The brewery was founded in 2008 by the German-born Namibian Jörg Finkeldey, who returned to Namibia. It was the first and only microbrewery in Namibia. The first beer was issued in August 2009. The brewery was named after the camel thorn that is widespread in Namibia .
Production, products and markets
All brewed beers were sold exclusively in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay until the beginning of 2010, and then also in other parts of the country. The beer was delivered chilled as it was unfiltered. Bottles and - unique for Namibia - 10 liter beer kegs with built-in taps were available. The distribution was originally aimed only at hotels, restaurants and bars, but not at supermarkets and alcohol shops. Later the beer was also spread in supermarkets and liquor stores.

Finances
In mid-2012 it became known that the brewery was in financial difficulties. The Namibian Development Bank (DBN) confirmed that Camelthorn will not be able to service the current loans of 10.1 million Namibian dollars plus interest of 3.9 million Namibian dollars.
