Amstel is a Dutch beer brand and was a brewery ( Amstelbrouwerij ). The brewery was founded in Amsterdam and is now owned by Heineken . In 1980 production was relocated to the Heineken brewery in Zoeterwoude . The brewery's best-known brand is Amstel Pils.

history

The brewery was founded in 1870 and named after the Amstel river , whose water was initially used for cooling. In 1872 the Amstel brewery was already brewing 10,000 hectoliters of pils a year . For the storage of the beer, ice from the canals was kept in special double-walled cellars in winter . Originally the beer was mainly drunk in Amsterdam. From 1883 it was also exported to Great Britain and Indonesia .

The Bavarian beer brewery Amstel was founded in 1892 by De Pesters, Kooy en Co. as a public limited company. In 1915 the production of Amstel was twenty-fold, and in 1926 Amstel controlled a third of Dutch beer exports. In 1941 Amstel, together with Heineken , took over the capital of the Amsterdam brewery Van Vollenhovens bierbrouwerij , which was closed in 1961.

In 1954 Amstel built a brewery in Suriname . A few years later, Amstel was the first Dutch brewery to export canned beer. At that time the total export of Amstel beer was 101,000 hectoliters. In 1958, an Amstel subsidiary produced its first beer in Jordan . In 1960 Amstel's third subsidiary opened - the Antillian brewery on Curaçao . Two years later, Amstel started production under license from the Almaza brewery in Lebanon . 1963 started with two new breweries, one in Puerto Rico and one in Greece . Today Athenian Brewery Amstel (and Heineken) brews under license for the Greek market. The French market is supplied with Amstel, which is brewed in the Heineken breweries in Schiltigheim and Marseille .

Heineken

In 1968, Amstel was taken over by its competitor Heineken . In 1980 the Amstel brewery in Amsterdam was closed and production continued in Zoeterwoude . The building on the Mauritskade was demolished. Only the former administration building remained and is now part of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam . The design of the front was carried out by the Dutch sculptor Gerarda Rueter .

Amstel is among other things sponsor of the ProTour cycling race Amstel Gold Race and the Amstel Curaçao Race .
