The Clube de Desportos da Maxaquene , often called Maxacca for short , is a sports club from the capital of Mozambique , Maputo , formerly known as Lourenço Marques . The club was founded in 1920 by the Portuguese under the name Sporting Clube de Lourenço Marques, primarily as a football club. The most famous football player in the club's history is Eusébio , who won the European Cup with SL Benfica in the 1960s and was the record scorer in the 1966 World Cup.

The club's soccer teams have won numerous championships since 1922 and Maxaquene is still one of the top teams in the country today. In addition to soccer, the club is also successful in handball and basketball. The basketball team won the championship of Portugal several times during colonial times and is the record champion of today's Mozambique. In addition, both the men's and women's teams won the Africa Cup of Masters.

General club history / football

The club goes back to students of high school October 5th ( Liceu 5 de Outubro ), who formed a soccer team in 1915 and called themselves Sporting in homage to the Lisbon club . The association was officially founded five years later. In the association's statutes, May 20, 1920 is noted as the date of foundation; on the letterhead of the SC Lourenço Marques was May 1, 1920 in the 1950s. The club was the sixth club to be associated with the Lisbon Sporting Clube de Portugal and henceforth proudly called itself 6ª Filial do SCP. The club's coat of arms showed the sporting lion, the The colors were also green and white, and the jerseys were also striped across.

Throughout its history, Sporting remained an association of the people sent by the Portuguese mainland to administer its colony. In the main, the members - officials and players - were recruited primarily from the police and the SMAE, the Serviço Municipalizado de Água e Electricidade , the public service and the municipal water and electricity companies. Afro-Africans either needed extraordinary talent, like Eusébio, or someone to support them.

In 1922 the club became the first city champion of Lourenço Marques. In the competition held until 1961, eight more titles followed. The first title win in a championship encompassing the entire Provcia de Moçambique came in 1960.

After independence, the club was renamed the Sporting Clube de Maputo in 1976 . Only two years later, the name was changed to Clube de Desportes do Maxaquene , as the club is located in the central district of Maputo of the same name. In addition, the club's colors were changed to blue, white and red.

The most successful epoch in the club's history was in the 1980s, when three championships were won in a row from 1984 to 1986. Most recently Maxaquene won the Mozambican League, the Moçambola, in 2012 .

The greatest international success was in 1995 when they reached the semi-finals of the African Cup Winners' Cup .
