The Schmeietal area is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-7820-341) in the south of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, designated by the Tübingen regional council in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) .
location
The approximately 980 hectares (ha) large reserve "Schmeietal" in the Upper Danube Nature Park is one of the natural spaces High Schwabenalb , Baaralb and Upper Danube Valley and Mid Flächenalb . It extends over four municipalities around the Schmiecha valley - called "Schmeie" from the municipality border to Straßberg , between Albstadt in the north to just before the confluence of the Schmeie with the Danube at Inzigkofen .

meaning
The protected area with - especially in the lower reaches - very near-natural flowing water, partially extensive grassland, near-natural forest communities, dry, warm and humid locations, rocky vegetation and limestone debris heaps is rich in cultural and historical sites.
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose is the preservation of a varied landscape of a side valley of the Danube on the Swabian Alb with twelve caves , near-natural forests on the slopes, rock and lime scree slopes as well as near-natural flowing water.

Contiguous protected areas
The FFH area "Schmeietal" includes the " Obere Donau Nature Park ", the FFH areas " Heuberg Military Training Area" (7820-342) and " Upper Danube Valley between Beuron and Sigmaringen " (7920-342), the " Eselmühle " nature reserve ( 4,307), the landscape protection areas “ Albstadt-Bitz ” (4.17.001) and “ Danube and Schmeiental ” (4.37.036) as well as the bird protection area “ Südwestalb and Upper Danube Valley ” (7820-441) are designated as contiguous protected areas.
