The FFH area Riede und Gewässer bei Mengen and Pfullendorf is located in the south of Baden-Württemberg and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . It was designated in 2015 through the amalgamation of three already existing FFH areas by the Tübingen regional council.

location

The approximately 540 hectares (ha) large reserve "Riede and water in quantities and Pfullendorf" is one of the natural area of Upper Swabian hills and the Danube Ablach plates . The nine sub-areas are spread across the eight cities and communities Herdwangen-Schönach , Hohentengen , Mengen , Meßkirch , Ostrach , Pfullendorf , Sigmaringen and Wald .

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose is the preservation of several low moor complexes , mainly used as grassland , small-scale transitional moors and litter meadows partly planted with forest, as well as three caves between Sigmaringen and Meßkirch, a wooded valley with rocks, three ponds surrounded by forest, the locality of Menningen, a former gravel pit and a silted-up dead ice hole .

meaning

The sub-areas are evidence of the Ice Age and post-Ice Age landscape development in the upcoming White Jura on the southernmost edge of the Swabian Alb with the last Jura foothills in the midst of glacial deposits. Characteristic are today predominantly agricultural areas with relics of fen habitats, such as moor grass meadows, and occurrence of Hellen Burnet Ant Bläulings , the Green broom moss , the greater mouse-ear , the great crested newt and the yellow-bellied toad .

history

The protected area was created in 2014/2015 by combining the three FFH areas originally reported to the European Union: "Enzkofer Ried and Mengener Riedle" (7922-341), " Areas between Sigmaringen and Meßkirch " (7920-341) and "Ruhestätter Ried, Egelseeried and Taubenried ”(8121-341).

With the FFH area "Riede und Gewässer bei Mengen and Pfullendorf", the " Obere Donau Nature Park ", the nature reserves " Egelsee-Ried " (4,110), " Ruhestetter Ried " (4,271) and " Taubenried " (4,288) are landscape conservation areasEnzkofer Ried ” (4.37.037), “Ruhestetter Ried” (4.37.005 and 4.37.040) and “Taubenried” (4.37.041) as well as the bird sanctuaryBaggerseen Krauchenwies / Zielfingen ” (7921-401) are designated as contiguous protected areas .
