Villegailhenc is a southern French municipality with 1735 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region .
Toponym
The place name Villagailhenc seems to indicate a Roman or Gallo-Roman origin: Villa Galieni = "country estate of Galienus".
location
Villegailhenc is located on the river Trapel in the old cultural landscape of Cabardès in the southern foothills of the Montagne Noire at an altitude of about 130 meters above sea level. d. M. and about ten kilometers (driving distance) north of Carcassonne . The distance to the eastern canton capital Conques-sur-Orbiel is about five kilometers.

In the 19th century the place always had between 800 and 1,000 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs resulted in a drop in the population to just over 600. In the last few decades, however, it has increased significantly again, which is primarily due to the significantly lower land prices and rents compared to the nearby city of Carcassonne.
economy
Despite its proximity to Carcassonne, the area around the town is still characterized by agriculture - especially viticulture, which Cabardès may have been doing in ancient times. Villegailhenc is part of the Cabardès wine region (AOC) .
history
Little information is available on the history of the place. The place name and finds of amphorae fragments , however, suggest a settlement that goes back a long way. The area traditionally belonged to the French king and therefore had no landlord ( seigneur ).
Attractions
- The origins of the parish church of Notre-Dame go back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Century back; however, it was rebuilt several times. Its current appearance comes largely from the 19th century.
- The stump of a windmill has also been preserved.
