Raze is located at an altitude of 224 m above sea level, nine kilometers south-southeast of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin and about twelve kilometers west-southwest of Vesoul (as the crow flies). Several ponds were created to the west of the village, and the flat valley floor has boggy areas in various places. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau, which averages 240 m. This plateau consists of sandy-marly sediments of the Tertiary . The fertile soils are mainly used for agriculture. Neighboring municipalities of Raze are Traves and Aroz in the north, Clans and Baignes in the east, Rosey and Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité in the south and Noidans-le-Ferroux and Vy-le-Ferroux in the west.

history

Raze was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule over the village was held by the commander of Sales-Montseugny, the La Charité monastery and a secular lord. Together with the Franche-Comté , Raze finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Iron ore was mined near the village for a long time. Today Raze is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 towns .

Attractions

The Saint-Christophe church was consecrated in 1785. It has statues of St. Christopher (16th century), St. Anne and Mary (both 17th century). Another statue of Christophorus from the 16th century is in the rectory. The former church from 1683 was converted into a residential building. The town center is characterized by various houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, which show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône. Other sights include the Château des Roux from the 18th century, the dovecote of the former castle and the Fontaine-Lavoir from 1828, which once served as a fountain, wash house and cattle trough.

With 318 inhabitants (2006), Raze is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (405 people were still counted in 1881), population growth was recorded again, especially during the 1980s. However, a downward trend has been observed since 1999.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Raze was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Vesoul to Fresne-Saint-Mamès . Further road connections exist with Traves, Aroz and Rosey.
