La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain is located at an altitude of 235 m above sea level, eight kilometers north of Gy and about 31 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the Saône basin north of the lowland of the Petite Morte on the southern edge of the Bois de Saint-Gand .

The area of ​​the 10.42 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . From east to west the area is crossed by the lowland of the Petite Morte, which provides drainage via the Cabri to the Morte . The fertile alluvial soils are mainly used for agriculture. To the south of the lowland, the communal soil extends into the forest of the Petits Bois de Gy . To the north, the area extends to the Bois de Saint-Gand plateau , which geologically belongs to the Saône basin and is made up of tertiary deposits. It is an average of 250 m and is made up of extensive forests. At 262 m, the highest point of La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain is reached on the hill near Les Blancs. The northern border runs in the Bois de Saint-Gand, and in the far north the area extends into the headwaters of the Cabri.

history

In the Middle Ages, La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was held by the lords of Gy. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church was rebuilt in the 19th century and has a rich interior, including a wooden altar from the 18th century, a statue of Saint-Quillain (16th century) and various other statues. In the hamlet of La Madeleine there is an originally Romanesque chapel.

With 154 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly during the 20th century (320 people were counted in 1896), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Gy to Fresne-Saint-Mamès . Other road links exist with Gray , Oiselay , Frasne-le-Château and Seveux .
