Lœuilley is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Lœuilley is located at an altitude of 214 m above sea level, 16 kilometers west of Gray and about 30 kilometers northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far west of the department, slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the Vingeanne valley .

The area of the 5.67 km² municipal area comprises a section in the gently undulating landscape northwest of the Saône basin . The western border runs along the Vingeanne, which flows with several meanders through an alluvial lowland to the south to the Saône. The flood plain averages 208 m and is approximately one kilometer wide. The river is accompanied by the waterway of the Canal de la Marne à la Saône , which cuts the meanders and runs for a short distance through the municipal area.

From the course of the river, the municipality extends eastward over the floodplain to the adjacent plateau, which reaches an average height of 240 m. The plateau consists of sediments from the Tertiary and calcareous layers from the Upper Jurassic . It is subdivided by a basin that opens towards the Vingeanne. While the western part of the plateau is used for agriculture, the eastern part is made up of the forest of the Bois de Lœuilley . At 248 m, the highest point of Lœuilley is reached here.

Neighboring municipalities of Lœuilley are Dampierre-et-Flée and Attricourt in the north, Broye-les-Loups-et-Verfontaine in the east, Champagne-sur-Vingeanne in the south and Beaumont-sur-Vingeanne in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Lœuilley belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the lords of Montigny. The Saint-Martin Priory was founded in the 11th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A change of area occurred in 1808 when the neighboring town of Attricourt was incorporated into Lœuilley. As early as 1821 Attricourt regained its independence as a municipality. Since 2008, Lœuilley has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, which comprises 14 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Lœuilley was rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style in the 19th century. It houses a statue of the Madonna from the 16th century and a wooden statue of St. Martin from the 18th century. The buildings of the former Saint-Martin priory have been preserved. A stone wayside cross is dated to 1755. The covered lavoir, which once served as a wash house and cattle trough, was built in the 19th century.

With 119 inhabitants (2007) Lœuilley is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (211 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Lœuilley was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Later a blacksmith and ironworks determined the village life. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Dampierre to Champagne-sur-Vingeanne. Another road connection is with Broye-les-Loups.
