geography

Sorans-lès-Breurey is located at an altitude of 250 m above sea level, 3 km southwest of Rioz and about 18 km north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, north of the river valley of the Ognon , in an open valley of the Buthiers brook, on the eastern edge of the Forêt de Sorans .

The area of the 14.37 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is traversed in a north-south direction by the Buthiers , which provides drainage to the Ognon. The valley floor is relatively narrow, but in the area of Sorans it opens into a wide hollow, which is filled with alluvial soils . It is mainly used for agriculture.

The valley of the Buthiers is flanked in the west by the long ridge of the Forêt de Sorans , on which the highest point of Sorans-lès-Breurey is reached at 363 m. The ridge consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period . To the east, the community area extends over the plateau, which is on average 260 m, to the wooded valley cut of the Ruisseau de Malgérard , another right tributary of the Ognon. In the south, the demarcation runs in the area of the Bois de la Chenove .

Two hamlet settlements belong to Sorans-lès-Breurey:

  • Breurey (240 m) on the Buthiers on the eastern edge of the Forêt de Sorans
  • They-en-Sorans (260 m) on the plateau north of the Ognon valley

Neighboring municipalities of Sorans-lès-Breurey are Montarlot-lès-Rioz in the north, Neuvelle-lès-Cromary and Aulx-lès-Cromary in the east, Cromary and Voray-sur-l'Ognon in the south and Boult in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Sorans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The reign of Soran was first mentioned in a document in 1226. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1686 the rulership was raised to the status of marquisate. The area changed in 1807 when the previously independent municipalities of Breurey-lès-Sorans (1806: 180 inhabitants), Neuvelle-lès-Cromary (1806: 279 inhabitants) and They (1806: 45 inhabitants) were combined with Sorans. Neuvelle-lès-Cromary got his independence back in 1831. Today Sorans-lès-Breurey is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .
