Frotey-lès-Vesoul is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the Vesoul agglomeration.

geography

Frotey-lès-Vesoul is located at an altitude of 225 m above sea level, about two kilometers east of the city of Vesoul . The village extends in the central part of the department, on the eastern edge of the Vesoul basin, north of the Colombine river , between the heights of Sabot in the north and Montmartine in the south.

The area of ​​the 7.63 km² large municipality includes a section in the area of ​​the Vesoul basin. The area is bordered in the west by the river Durgeon , in the south by its left tributary Colombine. The Durgeon flows through an almost two-kilometer-wide alluvial plain , which averages 220 m. The Colombine enters this valley floor from the east, after having previously passed a valley with several windings that has been cut around 30 m deep into the surroundings.

To the east, the community area extends to the Frotey plateau (270 m) and the Sabot plateau (347 m). This falls with a steep slope to the valley basin of the Durgeon, whereby the upper edge of the slope is crowned by a ledge. This section with the rock tower of the Rocher du Sabot is designated as a nature reserve ( Réserve Naturelle du Sabot de Frotey ). Further to the northeast, the municipal soil extends to the plateau of the Bois de Frotey . The highest point of Frotey-lès-Vesoul is reached here at 374 m.

While calcareous and sandy-marl-like sediments from the lower Jurassic period (Lias) emerge on the lower slope around Frotey , the mountain ranges consist of resistant limestone from the middle Jurassic period.

history

The area of ​​Frotey can look back on a very long history of settlement. Remains from prehistoric times have been found in a cave in the Colombine valley. Furthermore, the remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement were discovered during excavations.

Frotey was first mentioned in a document in 1238. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rulership was held by the Viscount of Vesoul. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Frotey-lès-Vesoul is a member of the community association Communauté de communes de l'agglomération de Vesoul, which comprises 19 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Frotey-lès-Vesoul originally dates from the 12th century, but was later changed several times and partially rebuilt. The oldest part is the choir from the 12th century, the transept and side chapels date from the 14th century, while the nave was rebuilt in the 18th century. The church houses furniture from the 18th century, several tombstones and a baptismal font from the 15th century. Behind the church is a 15th century Calvaire . The Château de Frotey was built in the 18th and 19th centuries and was the residence of the novelist Xavier de Montépin .

With 1,411 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Frotey-lès-Vesoul is one of the medium-sized communes in the Haute-Saône department. During the 20th century, the population increased continuously (only 442 people were counted in 1901), with the strongest growth observed during the 1970s. Around 1990 the population reached its highest level of around 1450 people. Since then, the population has been falling again; a decrease of around 10% was recorded. Today, the settlement area of ​​Frotey-lès-Vesoul has almost completely merged with that of Vesoul.

Until the 20th century, Frotey-lès-Vesoul was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Since the 1970s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed in the west of the municipality in the Durgeon valley on the outskirts of Vesoul. Companies in the cleaning, transport and construction and electronics industries have settled here. There are also various service companies, retail businesses, and leisure and sports facilities. Many workers are also commuters who work in the other villages of the Vesoul agglomeration.
