Traves is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Traves is located at an altitude of 215 m above sea level, six kilometers south of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin and about 14 kilometers west of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The street-line village extends in the central part of the department, slightly elevated on the southern edge of the Saône Valley , above the mouth of the Ruisseau de Vy-le-Ferroux .
The area of the 12.29 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The northern border runs in the lowland of the Saône, which flows here with large loops through a wide alluvial lowland to the west. The flood plain averages 203 m and is about one kilometer wide. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the loop at Traves being cut off by a side canal. The river banks in the area of the village have therefore been preserved in a natural state, and the Saône forms small islands in several places.
From the course of the river, the community area extends southwards over a steep slope onto the adjacent plateau. This plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . It is subdivided by the valley cuts of the Ruisseau de Vy-le-Ferroux and the Ruisseau de Quette with its side valleys. The fertile soils of the valley and the plateau (Haut de Craie in the east and La Sablonnière in the southeast) are mainly used for agriculture. In the west and south-west, the communal soil extends into the extensive forest of the Bois de l'Abbé. At 262 m, the highest elevation of Traves is reached here.
Two hamlet settlements belong to Traves:
- Le Mouterot (208 m) on the eastern edge of the Ruisseau de Vy-le-Ferroux valley
- Beauregard (218 m) on the southern slope of the Haut de Craie
Neighboring municipalities to Traves are Chantes , Ovanches and Bucey-lès-Traves in the north, Aroz in the east, Raze and Vy-le-Ferroux in the south and Soing-Cubry-Charentenay in the west.
history
The municipality of Traves was already settled in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the remains of the Dolmen Lochstein von Traves . Traves is first mentioned in a document in 1092. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Traves, a fiefdom of the Free County of Burgundy, has been occupied since the late 11th century. The villagers were granted freedom rights in 1418. The village and castle were affected by soldiers under Tremblecourt in 1477 after the Battle of Nancy and in 1595. Together with Franche-Comté , Traves finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. From 1964 until his death caused by arson in 1976, the convicted war criminal Joachim Peiper lived in Traves. Today Traves is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 villages . In the hamlet of Mouterot, the Saint-Marcel-lès-Chalon monastery founded a priory in the 11th century.
Attractions
The Church of Décollation de Saint-Jean-Baptiste ( Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist ) was built in 1746 with the plan of a Greek cross. The remarkable furnishings include the richly carved altar from the 18th century, furniture, paintings and frescoes as well as a portrait of the Madonna from the 16th century.
Various houses in the traditional Haute-Saône style from the 16th century have been preserved in the town center. The Maison du Prévôt dates back to 1617. Only a few traces of the former mansion are visible.

With 362 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Traves is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (536 people were counted in 1886), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Traves was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses, including an agricultural machinery company and an embroidery factory. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The place is off the major thoroughfare on a department road that leads from Fretigney-et-Velloreille to Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin . Further road connections exist with Soing, Ovanches and Aroz.
